The Bene Gesserit have led a many century year old genetic breeding program. They chose people from powerful families, who possess high intellect and prescient abilities and made sure to secure those bloodlines. They do this, by sending one of their sisters
to make their target fall in love with and have a child with them. They are commanded to give birth to a daughter and have the daughter be raised as a The Bene Gesserit sister. That way they are able to secure the bloodline for their genetic breeding program.
Their ultimate aim, was to produce a superbeing, a male Bene Gesserit known as the Kwisatz Haderach. This individual would be capable of accessing both male and female ancestral memories. Thus unlocking the full potential of human consciousness.

This being would have full prescience and be able to see all possible futures. With this power the The Bene Gesserit could rule the galaxy.
In order to secure the Atreties bloodline they sent out The Bene Gesserit sister Jessica to make Duke Lato fall in love with her. But because she loved him so much and knew that he wanted a son, she disobeyed the The Bene Gesserit mission and gave birth to a son instead.
This messed up the plan for The Bene Gesserit.
Because since he was Duke lato’s son, he would not be raised under their control.
For many centuries the Bene Gesserit spread myths, legends, and religious beliefs across different worlds in order to influence cultures and societies.
They were seeding myths on planets with primitive cultures. They seeded myths about a prophesied messiah-like figure who would possess extraordinary powers and bring about significant societal change.
The Emperor messed up by letting Paul and his mother live. He thought that if the Atreity’s kingdom is destroyed, then his seat on the throne is no longer threatened. But he did not account for the fact that Paul was in the perfect position to take advantage of the myths and legends, seeded on the planet Dune by the The Bene Gesserit.
Drinking the water if life is the final test a Bene Gesserit must take
in order to become a Reverend Mother.
When a female drinks the water of life and survives, it unlocks their genetic memory, but only on their maternal side.
But when a male Bene Gesserit drinks it and survives, it unlocks the genetic memory, on both his maternal and paternal side. This allows him to have true prescience, and see all the possible futures.
When a Bene Gesserit drinks the water of life while having a baby in her womb, the baby becomes Preborn. When a baby is preborn they awaken the genetic memories of their ancestors. Before the baby could even have a chance to form a personality of their own, they have the personalities of their ancestors speaking in their mind. This is why after drinking the water of life. Jessisca began telepathically communicating with the baby in her womb.
That was some of the missing context from the movie that I thought was important to include in order to have a better grasp of the story.
